In reality, however, Zurg is an older, alternate version of Buzz Lightyear from a world where the hero had become jaded and cynical. Upon seeing his wizened yet familiar visage, Buzz thinks he's looking at his own father. Toward the movie's end, Zurg steps out from his armor, proving that what's inside isn't a soulless robot but a human being. While this ended up coming to pass, it wasn't how fans thought it would. Many fans likely went into the film expecting the revelation that Zurg and Buzz ( now voiced by Chris Evans) were related. Given its more "realistic" stakes, things are far darker and less cartoony than what got presented in the main series. Lightyear was meant to be the "real story" behind the toys in the Toy Story universe or at least the movie that Andy supposedly watched as a kid that made him want a Buzz Lightyear toy. And with how blatant these "Easter eggs" were, it's actually good that Lightyear went in a completely different direction. Sound effects and lines are taken from Star Wars wholesale, making the homages even more obvious. For instance, the latter had once claimed that Zurg was building a super weapon capable of destroying a planet, similar to Darth Vader and his Death Star. Zurg was always a very obvious Darth Vader expy, with Toy Story constantly homaging Star Wars through both him and Buzz. Of course, this references The Empire Strikes Back, where Luke Skywalker discovers that Darth Vader is his father. Upon learning this, Zurg reveals the truth: he is Buzz Lightyear's father, a reality that sends the space ranger reeling in disbelief. Unfortunately for Buzz, the truth beneath the armor was even more harrowing than Zurg himself.īefore their climactic battle, Buzz was under the impression that Zurg had killed his father. With Zurg's gigantic, robotic armor and seemingly inhuman status, he would appear to be a perfect, if a bit generic, adversary for the over-the-top space hero. A toy version of the dastardly figure appears toward the climax, with him and Buzz Lightyear finally facing each other as the film nears its end. Toy Story 2 finally showcased Zurg, a villain mentioned by Buzz Lightyear in the first movie.
